Kunjapuri is crested atop green forested hills, at a height of 1645 meters from Rishikesh. Steeped in the echoing silence, the shrine is one of the many seats of Shakti, the Mother Goddess. It has long been a destination for devout pilgrims, spiritual seekers and adventurers alike. The awe-inspiring mountain vista on a clear day from Kunjapuri is a stuff of poetry and its charms reaches the climax at break of the day when the first rays of the sun strike. The foothill towns of Rishikesh, Dehradun and Haridwar could be seen laid along the shores of a glittering Ganges, the eternal river veining through this divine land. Standing at the edge of the earth on the terraces of the temple, all troubles and tribulations of human life seem like specs of dust blowing in the wind. Because of the unmatched sense of peace and lightness the place emanates, a visit to Kunjapuri at sunrise is a major event in our yogic itinerary.
On the day of Kunjapuri visit, the students are awakened when the darkness is still thick in the wee hours of the night. The travel uphill on the road through the forest is arranged in a spacious bus. The route passes by the picturesque town of Narendra Nagar, which once had been the royal capital of the Tehri, Garhwal district. Keeping the way to Gangotri— another holy site celebrating the origin of the Ganges at the side— pilgrims to Kunjapuri Temple have to go on till the end of the road at the foot of the temple. In the company of the teachers, the yoga disciples reach the temple summit at sunrise and offer their prayers and salutations to the sheer power of the sun god. Being a witness to the rising sun at Kunjapuri, you will be washed off of previous sins and negative impressions, announcing a new beginning.
As the sun slowly becomes manifest in all its shinning glory, coming out of the night, the shroud of ignorance seems to lift from the consciousness of its witnesses. The gleaming snow peaks of the mighty Himalayas rise at a distance from the pool of darkness before us. Its unmatched magnificence is a signature of divine creation and a revelation to the seekers of truth on a yogic journey. When you listen to the teachers reiterate the words of glory to the Almighty on this pristine morning, your journey on the path of “yoga” which also means “union with the divine”, will come to a completion.
The blessings of the Mother Goddess of Kunjapuri will remain with you forever and after, as will the memory of this amazing visit.
